Jan Kooistra – born in Damwoude in 1950, spent his whole childhood drawing and painting. Growing up in Friesland, the landscape, the Wadden Sea, animals and flowers were an inexhaustible source of inspiration and his great love of nature translates into beautiful oil paintings. He started his own gallery in Dokkum where he is currently exhibiting his works.

He calls his style "dreamy realities" or "picturesque realism”. Over the years he’s had several large exhibitions in Groeneveld Castle in Baarn, the Singer Museum in Laren, Hotel Des Indes, The Hague, the Floriade, Zoetermeer and many others. He also appeared in several TV programs including the dutch TV channels Avro and EO where they displayed his work in a show called "In beeld met Jan Kooistra”.

Het Scheppingsproject

"For a while now, I’ve thought about how lucky I am to be blesses with such a wonderful talent. Although I'm thankful every day I wanted to give something back. A gift to God, to thank him!

There is nothing more appropriate than to use the talent, which he has given to me. I’ve decided to make a series of paintings, not for myself, not for another, but for God. The minute the idea came to me, I knew what I wanted to do. Creation is so special! Every day, we enjoy it. There are no words to describe it, so incredibly beautiful! So in February 2010 I ordered large canvases of the finest linen and began to paint the seven days of creation. I’d read and immersed myself in many Bible translations, studied them, compared them before hand and after many months painting in the silence of the studio I am now nearing the end of the painting of the fifth day. Soon I will start on the sixth and seventh.
To enhance the premiere of the paintings, Eppie Dam has written songs to be sung by "The vocal ensemble Boniface, Dokkum” supported by music written by Jan de Jong.

There will be plenty more talent including a few brilliant soloists, we are now all busy with the preparations. The whole thing will be presented in the Frisian language under the title: 'Ut Genegen Fjoer'. The premiere of the exhibition, including the music portion, is scheduled for the evening of May 21, 2011 at 11.00 pm in the Grote Kerk (Great Church), in Dokkum.

If you’d like to attend, you can make a reservation by emailing:

After the premiere the paintings are exhibited throughout the summer at Dokkum’s Grote Kerk.
